2021’s hottest new hotels #EUROPE

9 hot-to-trot hotels opening across Europe this year.

Take. A look. At these.

KALESMA, MYKONOS

The tag on this gorgeous new hotel is ‘reviving Mykonian spirit’ and we need a bit of that before it all turns into Ibiza, the bad side. Mykonos is perhaps the most fun anyone can have while in a holiday setting and while we’ve never really fallen for that scratchy Greek countryside the sea is gorgeous, the beaches full o’ fun and the nightlife... well, let’s just say Jackie O and leave it there. Flawless! As is Kalesma, with its Cycladic-inspired elegance, natural materials, white-on-white-on-stone palette, rooms with views right out over the sea and none of that Greek blue you get so sick of. Clean uncluttered loveliness. We’re in!

CAN FERRERETA, MALLORCA

Anything with a connection to Palma’s delicioso Sant Francesc is already our favourite hotel in Mallorca (or shares that honour with SF). But this is a different kettle of pescado altogether: while SF is in town, this is in a 17th century mansion in Santanyi, not that far from Palma and close to some of the best beaches on the island (we love Mallorca, by the way. It feels like real Spain but on an island! So clever!) Beautiful gardens, a natural palette of stones and beiges, OCRE, the wine-cellar restaurant that spills into a courtyard run by Alvar Albaladejo, a pool bar... At this rate, you might not even get to Magaluf!

ROSEWOOD VILLA MAGNA, MADRID

We love Madrid. Thinking of going as it for Halloween. But it’s always been a bit lax on really brilliant hotels. Urso and Tótem, sure. And the ME on Plaza de Santa Ana is more than half decent (did we tell you we interviewed Ricky Martin in there? Twice!) but this year sees a bit of a kick up the jacksy in terms of glamorous, international, slick-as hotels of the like we’re used to in London and New York and Paris and names, names, names. The Four Seasons set up shop last year, Mandarin Oriental have spritzed the old Hotel Ritz and will re-open it as Mandarin Oriental Ritz (catchy!) come spring, while the lush Rosewood group is opening its first Spanish property this autumn - a super-luxe, super-sexy, super-we’re-so-going 150-roomer on the proper fancy Paseo de la Castellana.

KIMPTON ST. HONORÉ, PARIS

Kimpton is taking over the world and that is a world we want to live in, let us tell you. The newest addition to the family is slap bang in one of the coolest areas of Paris - L’Opera just there, Rue de Rivoli right there, basically it’s where you’d get a client a room if you were in Call My Agent - and has brought light and bright to a beautiful deco building. Inside they’re calling it minimalist and art nouveau all at the same time! To our eyes it’s airy and chic and has a California-inspired patio restaurant, a 360-degree panoramic rooftop bar and, of course, an amazing spa. We wouldn’t stay anywhere else!

OKU, IBIZA + KOS

Why launch one knockout haute-boutique when you can launch two? This double whammy of must-stay glamour will come to full-blown, full-wow fruition this spring in Ibiza and Kos – or Kos and Ibiza if you’re that way inclined – and are coming to you from brand new kid on the high-end hospitality block, OKU. In Kos you’ll be getting an adults-only (hooray!) resort with its own private beach, 100 rooms and a handful of two-bedroom villas, while Ibiza’s OKU - starring in our gallery right up there - is giving you the island’s biggest pool (one of four, fyi), swim-up guest rooms or the four-bed villa if you’re lucky, dining curated by SUSHISAMBA’s Mark Vaessen and design by MG&AG - so it’s all minimalist and earthy and yum. Expect one-stop palaces of hushed luxury and Japanese-inspired Zen, and us on all the best sun loungers.

SIX SENSES SHAHARUT, ISRAEL

If the Israeli desert was good enough for that most ancient of influencers, Jesus Christ, to spend 40 days and 40 nights in, we think it’s good enough for us. OK, so that was the Judaean Desert and this is Negev Desert, but never let facts stand in the way of a joke. Added to which, Israel is so boutique as a country, you may be in the desert but you’re a hop and a skip from bustling Tel Aviv and bustling-in-a-different-slightly-mad-way Jerusalem. Then, best of all, this is a Six Senses property and that means things are next level. Sixty suites and pool villas crafted from local rocks, beautiful airy dining spaces (including under the stars), the best spa treatments in the world and a whole raft of spiritual and non-spiritual desert experiences. Then to Tel Aviv for a big gay weekend, right?

Le Grand Controle Versailles.jpeg

LE GRAND CONTRÔLE, CHÂTEAU DE VERSAILLES

The very first hotel within the ground of Versailles, just 14-keys, restaurant by Alain Ducasse, interiors by Christophe Tollemer, a Valmont Spa and *squeals * unprecedented access to the palace (we love unprecedented!)… Airelles’ Le Grand Contrôle (try saying that with a mouthful of Ruinart) might just be the darndest thing since Marie-Antoinette’s head got paraded on a stick through the Marais. No, you eat the cake!

VICO MILANO, MILAN

The pedigree’s faultless – his family own Tuscany’s Castello di Vicarello – so when Neri Baccheschi-Berti decided to slip in a little dolce, dolce vita into Milan the whole city’s ears pricked up. ‘Cause they know they’ll be getting a fine, fine seven-bed boutique with speak-easy bar, curated library, chic-as sitting room with smart art on the walls, right on Corso Genova 11, also known as minutes from the Duomo and smart-for-town Via Tortona. All of (fashionable) Milan is a-buzz.

THE HOXTON, ROME

With the Vila Borghese on your doorstep, MACRO minutes away and the Art Nouveau-packed Coppede district right there for all your art nouveau meanderings, the location’s very Hoxton – local, real, cool, but close enough to all the Eternal City bumf you still want to check out, even if this is your umpteenth time in Rome. Throwing a whole load of love onto an unloved ‘70s building The Hoxton Rome is bringing 192 rooms, a destination lobby, all-day diner, outdoor terrace and all the right buzz to the edge of Rome’s Parioli neighbourhood.
