When Neil and Chris met Marc and Dave

It’s like an 80s wet dream: the two gayest, most perfect synth-duos coming together - as it were - on one track that almost sounds like the best of both of them. For our purposes, the dream in question is the single Purple Zone by Soft Cell with Pet Shop Boys.

It all started, apparently, when Neil and Chris (that would be Pet Shop Boys) went to see Marc and Andy (Soft Cell, you are keeping up, aren’t you?) at one of their sell-out shows last year, heard the track *checks notes* Purple Zone and thought it was humdinger. The obvious course of action was to ask Soft Cell if they could remix it but it was while in the studio that they all realised that this could be not just a remix but a full-blown collaboration.

And hey bingo, that’s what we have in *checks notes again* Purple Zone, a song that sounds a bit Soft Cell but with the sort of anthemic blast and fey Neil vocals of classic PSB classics like Always On My Mind with a video that sees Marc selling ice-creams out of a Tonibell van.

The best collaboration since Stock Aitken Waterman did Donna Summer? Could be.
