Clothes as art, people!

Are you one of those people who collects clothes? We don’t mean a hoarder. We mean a connoisseur. Someone who knows what they’re talking about when it comes to clobber and who could never get rid of that original cotton lawn Vivienne Westwood smock shirt or that Richmond Cornejo zippy punky jacket (we realise using examples from our own collection is seriously aging us…)

Well, if that does sound a bit like you, please dip a finger or a toe or even a nose into journalist and photographer Mark C. O’Flaherty’s new coffee table book, Narrative Thread. He has rounded up some of the world’s great experts on fashion and got them to share their stashes with him not only to photograph but to seriously rifle through, hearing the stories behind some of the most extraordinary outfits ever to keep a body warm.

The names skid all over the celebrity road from Oscar-winning costume designer Sandy Powell to nightclub legend Winn Austin and from superstar milliner Stephen Jones to the queen of downtown Manhattan Susanne Bartsch taking in Charlie Casely-Hayford and John Matheson from the McQueen Vault as he goes.

The conversations are insightful and fun while the pictures let you really get into the nuts and bolts of those fantastic outfits. And at less than £25, what a fabulous Christmas present for someone?
